Messier 109 (M109) is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major. It's about 83.5 million light-years from Earth and is the furthest object in Messier's catalog. M109 is also known as NGC 3992.

Here are some other facts about M109:

M109 is the brightest member of a group of roughly 80 galaxies known as the Ursa Major Galaxy Cluster.

M109 is home to a trillion stars.

M109 is different from other S-shaped galaxies because its bar ends in short counterclockwise arms.

M109 can be seen southeast of the star Phecda (γ UMa, Gamma Ursa Majoris).

M109 is bright enough for its core to be seen through an 80mm instrument under good conditions.

Charles Messier observed M109 in 1781 and it was officially added to the Messier catalog in 1953.
